20230829_zia_c218_084 August 29, 2023, Auckland, North Island, New Zealand: This image shows:A whale vertabra...A trove of important fossils has been discovered in an unusual location - a wastewater treatment plant in Auckland, New Zealand..Fossils of the worldâ??s oldest known flax snails, an extinct sawshark spine, and great white shark teeth were all found in a mound of sand excavated from beneath Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant in 2020, according to a new paper published in the New Zealand Journal of Geology and Geophysics..In total 266 fossil species were discovered in one of the richest and most diverse groups of three-million-year-old fauna ever found in New Zealand. At least ten previously unknown species will be described and named in future research.. In 2020, when Aucklandâ??s Watercare was excavating two huge vertical shafts for a major upgrade of the major pipeline that brings raw sewage for treatment from the central city they dug through an ancient shell bed. Auckland paleontologist Bruce Hayward likened it to â??finding gold right on your doorstepâ?. Once they were informed of the fossil depositâ??s significance, Watercare and their contractors were eager to help and a huge heap of shelly sand was dumped in a nearby paddock so that paleontologists could search through it over many months. Watercare also funded two paleontology graduate students, working under the supervision of Auckland Museum curator Dr Wilma Blom, to painstakingly sift through the heap for many weeks. As a result, it is estimated that over 300,000 fossils were examined and several thousand have been returned in the museum as a record of this â??once-in-a-lifetime findâ?..â??Detailed identification of the fossils shows that they were deposited between 3 and 3.7 million years ago in a subtidal channel in an early version of the modern Manukau Harbourâ?, said Dr Hayward. â??At that time, sea level was slightly higher than it is today as the wo (Credit Image:

43343184 2022 - Whale shark or basking shark (Rhincodon typus) in Donsol, Philippines, Southeast Asia. The whale shark, the world's largest fish, is in serious danger of extinction. As the water warms it affects the distribution of species, including larvae and plankton, on which the whale shark feeds. All animals in the food chain will face the threat of changing cycles and the shifting location of their food.Whale sharks are in danger of extinction. Some estimates suggest that populations of this species worldwide have plummeted by more than 50% over the last 75 years. Although they are protected in many countries, they are still caught by the fishing industry, deliberately to sell their fins (shark fin soup is a common staple in some parts of Asia), and accidentally hunted. Whale sharks are also threatened by oil and gas drilling, ship crashes and of course climate change. Photo Credit: Sergi Reboredo/ Sipa USA/ Fotoarena
